Ferreira (Alipio Augusto)

Born in the parish of Santa Cruz on December 27, 1837. He attended the high school in Funchal and was a primary school teacher, later holding the position of finance clerk in some municipalities of this district. He had an important collaboration in prose and verse in various Madeiran newspapers and was the main editor of the Pátria. According to Inocencio, he wrote the novels Um Sacrilegio and Romance em seis capítulos, which were ready for printing but were never published in a volume, only some excerpts were published in various newspapers. He lived for many years in Demerara and was the editor of the newspaper O Portuguez. He was a merchant, but had little success in his commercial transactions, eventually dying in New York, in a hospital bed, on August 3, 1915, in poverty and complete obscurity.
