Fajã

In Madeira, the name "Fajãs" is given to certain tracts of land, of greater or lesser extent, formed by the collapse of land located upstream, generally constituting remarkably fertile soil. The "Fajãs" are formed both in the interior of the island by the collapse of land that has disintegrated from the slopes of the mountains, and along the entire coastline, of which notable examples are a considerable part of the parish of Jardim do Mar, Lugar de Baixo, Fajã dos Padres, Fajã da Areia, and others.
