Starfish / Estrelas do Mar

This name is given to some echinoderms of Madeira, among which stand out the Uraster glacialis, with bluish thorns, the Ophidiaster attenuatus, red and spineless, the Ophiocoma nigra, black in color, the Ophiolepis squamata, small and white, and the O. siliata, with rigid thorns. This last species is common at a depth of 20 to 30 fathoms. The largest of the starfish is the Astropecton aurantiacus, a Mediterranean species of red color, which sometimes reaches large dimensions.
