Espírito Santo (João Gomes do)

He was born in the parish of São Gonçalo in this municipality and died in the city of Porto on December 16, 1839, at the age of about eighty. He was a distinguished artillery officer and for several years commanded the artillery quartered at the São Tiago fortress. He was a man of upright character and distinguished himself as a journalist, having been the editor of a political newspaper published in Funchal, which enjoyed great renown at the time. (He collaborated in many periodicals on the mainland, having been away from journalistic activities for many years.
