Espadana (Phormium tenax)

A lily native to New Zealand, cultivated in Monte, Sant'Ana, and some gardens in Funchal. The glaucous and long leaves of this plant, cut into strips after wilting, are used for bandages as a substitute for wicker, and a fiber can be extracted from them, which in some countries is used for making ropes and a strong and durable fabric. The juice of the leaves of espadana has been recommended for cancerous diseases.
