History

Drumond

"This surname," says the annotator of the 'Saudades,' "is one of the most distinguished in the noble families of Madeira; it comes from João Escorcio Drumond, a native of the kingdom of Scotland and son of João Drummond, lord of Stobhall, brother of Annabella, wife of Robert III, king of that kingdom, as shown by the authentic document preserved by his descendants, issued in Scotland in 1525, from which it also appears that the said João Escorcio Drummond moved to the island of Madeira a hundred years before, making it evident that it was in 1425; he lived in Santa-Cruz, where he married Branca Affonso, sister of the first vicar, and a native of Covilhã".

Coat of Arms:

(cid:1176) A shield with a gold field and three wavy red bands, and as a difference a green bric with a golden D; open silver helmet, garnished with gold, gold and red mantling, with its gold collar(cid:1177).

Inocencio, in his Bibliographic Dictionary, mentions that a memoir about the Drumond family of Madeira was published in Brazil.
