History

Albuquerque (Manuel Saldanha da Gama)

He was appointed governor and captain general of Madeira on March 6, 1754, and took office on May 16 of the same year. Called to Lisbon in February 1757 to hold an important position, he was made Count of Ega and then appointed viceroy of India. Accused of having committed abuses in the exercise of this position, he was imprisoned, and only after his death did a court sentence rehabilitate his memory. He died on December 6, 1771. When he left this island for Lisbon, he was replaced in the government of Madeira by the diocesan bishop D. Gaspar Afonso da Costa Brandão in accordance with the laws then in force.
