Coutinho

This family name comes from Luiz Fernandes de Matos Coutinho, who moved to Madeira around 1580 and had a large trading house here. This Luiz Coutinho was the son of the knight Antonio Vaz de Matos, who accompanied Afonso de Albuquerque to India. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Quietação in Santo Antonio was founded by Loureuço de Matos Coutinho in 1670, who probably descended from the aforementioned Luiz Coutinho.
