Costa

There are two branches of this family, one from Luiz Alvares da Costa and the other from Nuno da Costa. Luiz Alvares da Costa came to Madeira during the time of D. Afonso V and here he was the overseer and provider of the royal estate, and founded the convent of S. Francisco, in Funchal; Nuno da Costa was one of the first settlers of Machico and one of the procurators of this village and that of Santa Cruz before the king, for the celebration of the charter of Machico, in 1515.
