Cossart
This family surname comes from William Cossart, who as early as 1809 had some interests linked to the wine export business of this island, carried out by the English commercial house of Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & Scott. The commercial house, now owned (1920) by Cossart, Gordon & Co., was founded in 1745 and has since operated under the following business names: Francisco Newton (1745-1748), Newton & Spence (1748-1758), Newton & Gordon (1758-1775), Newton, Gordon & Johnston (1775-1791), Newton, Gordon & Murdoch (1791-1802), Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & Scott (1805-1834), Newton, Gordon Murdoch & Co. (1834-1839), Newton, Gordon, Cossart & Co. (1839-1861), and Cossart, Gordon & Co. (1861).
