Vila Mendo (Viscount of)

By decree of 12 April 1881 the Viscount of Vila Mendo was appointed civil governor of Funchal, taking up the post on 23 May of the same year. He served only a few months.

He was civil governor of this district a second time, appointed by decree of 10 November 1882 and taking office on the 16th of that month and year.

As an elective peer (par electivo), he represented Madeira in the Cortes (Portuguese parliament) in the legislative sessions of 1884 to 1887 and 1890 to 1892.

António de Gouveia Osório was granted the title of Viscount of Vila Mendo, a parish (freguesia) in the district of Viseu where he had a manor house and an entailed estate (morgadio) inherited from his forebears, and where he was born in 1826. He was a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in law and a member of the Court of Audit (Tribunal de Contas).
