Biographical note on Dr. José Varela, a physician and army medical captain born in Ponta do Sol in 1874, who sat on the District General Council and was elected senator for Madeira.

He was born in Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’) on 19 March 1874. He is a physician and surgeon, trained at the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon (Escola Médico-cirúrgica de Lisboa), and a medical captain in the army, having enlisted with the rank of second lieutenant on 21 October 1903. He is a member of the District General Council (Junta Geral do Distrito), and in 1921 he was elected senator for Madeira (1922).
