Steamship

Original title: Vapor

Records the first steamship to visit Funchal, the British merchant vessel Duke of York, in May 1828, which also called at Porto Santo.

The first steamship to visit the port of Funchal was the Duke of York, of the British merchant navy. It arrived here in the first half of May 1828, with a large number of passengers who visited various parts of the island.

The Duke of York also called at Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), arriving on 15 May with some 400-odd passengers, some of them people from Funchal. These passengers landed on that island at about 11 in the morning and, after seeing the principal sights, re-embarked at about 3 in the afternoon bound for Madeira.
