Termo
Under absolute rule, the termo was a subdivision of a comarca under a judge who also presided over the municipal council; the Funchal termo covered 17 parishes.
In the days of absolute rule, this was a subdivision of the judicial district (comarca) and came under the jurisdiction of a judge who was at the same time president of the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal). The termo (municipal jurisdictional district, a subdivision of the comarca) of Funchal, headed by a juiz de fora (crown-appointed judge from outside the district) appointed by the king, stretched from Caniço (‘reed’) to the stream of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’) and took in 17 parishes.
