Brief account of the call at Funchal on 8 January 1924 of Prince Alexander of Teck and Princess Alice, en route to the Cape of Good Hope, who visited Terreiro da Luta and descended by wicker toboggan.

Prince Alexander of Teck and his wife, Princess Alice, called at Funchal on 8 January 1924 aboard the British steamer Windsor Castle, bound for the Cape of Good Hope. They were received with military honours. They went up to Terreiro da Luta (‘ground of the fight’), where they took an afternoon meal, then descended to Funchal in wicker toboggans (carros de verga), embarking shortly after midday.
