Humanitarian society founded in Funchal in 1858 to rescue people from shipwrecks, epidemics, fires and similar calamities; apparently short-lived.
A society under this name was founded in this city on 5 June 1858. According to the first article of its statutes, its purpose was ‘the rescue of persons in shipwrecks on the beaches of Funchal and their vicinity, and the rescue of persons in epidemics, fires and other similar calamities, in the city of Funchal and its surroundings’.
This society, whose statutes were approved by decree of 13 January 1862, was founded by a group of the most eminent people in Funchal. We believe that it was short-lived.
