Sapo (Tetrodon marmoratus)

A pufferfish living near Madeira's coast, feeding on crustaceans and caught in quantity with trawl nets.

A fish of the family Gymnodontes, which lives near the coast of Madeira and feeds on small crustaceans, crushing them with its powerful jaws. On muddy bottoms it is caught in large quantities with trawl nets. It has a large abdominal sac which sometimes swells excessively, forcing it to the surface, where it dies or is taken by seabirds.
