Madeiran storm petrel (Oceanodroma Castro)

Original title: Roque de Castro (Oceanodroma Castro)

The Madeiran storm petrel, a small seabird named after its call, nesting in rock crevices on the coast.

A small bird of the family Procellariidae, which spends part of its life on the high seas, sometimes ranging quite far from the coast. On dark nights it flies over the coastal rocks, uttering a cry that somewhat resembles the name by which it is known. It lays a single egg in a crevice in the rocks; the egg is white except at one end, where it bears reddish spots. It feeds on marine animals, which it shares with its chick, and the chick, when attacked in the nest, vomits an oil of a lovely wine-red colour and characteristic smell.
