Pterygium

Original title: Pterégio

Pterygium, an eye condition noted as common in Madeira by Dr Heberden about 170 years earlier and still frequent in 1921.

This disease, also known as unha do olho (‘nail of the eye’), was noted as frequent in Madeira some 170 years ago by Dr Heberden, an English physician. Dr Alfredo Ernesto Rodrigues, a distinguished eye specialist, has told us that it continues to occur on a large scale on the island. It is characterised by a thickening of part of the conjunctiva, which almost always appears at the inner corner of the eye (1921).
