Pinto (family)

Original title: Pinto

The Pinto family of Madeira, descended from two noblemen who settled on the island in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.

This family surname derives from Lopo Fernandes Pinto and Gonçalo Pinto Alcoforado, both of noble descent. The former came to live in Madeira around the middle of the 15th century and died in 1500; the latter settled on this island around 1500 and made his home in Machico, where he died. Lopo Fernandes Pinto held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) land in Santana (‘St Anne’) and in São Jorge.
