Pestana dos Reis (Manuel)
Biography of Manuel Pestana dos Reis (b. 1894), a Madeiran law graduate and poet who published the verse collection Canções de Tristes in 1913.
He was born in Madeira on 1 April 1894 and is a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in law of the University of Lisbon (Universidade de Lisboa), although he began his legal studies at the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra). He attended the Funchal Seminary (Seminário do Funchal) before enrolling in the faculty of law. As a student he devoted himself lovingly to poetry, publishing in 1913 a promising volume of verse entitled Canções de Tristes. This mentions the forthcoming appearance of the volumes A avosinha and Canções da Ilha, which it seems to us were never published. He has contributed extensively to various newspapers of Coimbra and Funchal (1921).
