Palha-carga

Vernacular name for the grass Festuca donax, common in the inland ravines of Madeira; in some parts of the island the name is also applied to Brachypodium sylvaticum.

The vernacular name of Festuca donax, a grass 5 to 15 decimetres tall, with broad leaves and spikelets gathered in ample, loose and sometimes drooping panicles. This plant is common in the ravines of the interior of Madeira. Brachypodium silvaticum, which has large spikelets gathered in a slightly nodding spike, is also known by the name palha-carga in various parts of the island.
