Short entry on mutualism (mutual-aid principles) in Madeira, referring back to the Associação 4 de Setembro de 1862 and to further reading.
In the article ‘Associado 4 de Setembro de 1862’ (I-97) we gave a brief account of the earliest efforts to establish the principles of mutualism here in Madeira. These principles have borne their valued fruit only very slowly, with the exception of the association just mentioned, which stands as an admirable commemorative pillar (padrão) testifying to their beneficial effect. A detailed article on this subject, published in the issue of Trabalho e União (‘Labour and Union’) of 1 September 1917, is well worth reading.
