Bats

Original title: Morcegos

Bats of Madeira: two species are known, the endemic Vesperugo madeirensis and the European V. maurus.

Mammals of the order Chiroptera, of which two species are known in the archipelago: Vesperugo madeirensis, of Madeira and the Canary Islands, and V. maurus, a European species. Bats are insectivorous and come out only at night, spending the day hidden in dark places, hanging by their hind limbs.

Vesperugo maurus is a larger and more robust animal than V. madeirensis, as the specimens in the Seminary Museum (Museu do Seminário) show.
