Mendonça

The Mendonça surname in Madeira probably descends from the donatary families of Porto Santo and Machico through marriages.

This family surname perhaps derives from descendants of the donataries (donatário) of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) and Machico, since Bartolomeu Perestrelo, first donatary of that island, married Beatriz Furtado de Mendonça, and João Teixeira, third son of Tristão Vaz Teixeira, married Filipa de Mendonça Furtado, by whom he had Tristão de Mendonça.
