Meireles (Viscount of)
Original title: Meireles (Visconde de)
Entry on the Visconde de Meireles, writer and journalist who visited Madeira and in 1913 championed rebuilding Columbus's house.
This distinguished writer and journalist, who died in 1915, visited this island several times and held the most devoted admiration for its natural beauty and mild climate. It was in 1913, when he spent a long stay in this city, that he argued brilliantly and with weighty arguments for the idea of rebuilding the house where Christopher Columbus lived, as we have mentioned elsewhere (vol. 1, p. 286 ff.). He also concerned himself with the triptych painted on wood in the sacristy of the parish church of São Pedro (‘St Peter’), making known to Madeirans the fine description of it by the distinguished writer Manuel Teixeira Gomes in his book Cartas sem moral nenhuma.
