Martius (C. Fred. Phil. de)

German botanist (1794–1868) of the Brazil expedition who visited Madeira in the 1820s and recorded plants from Funchal and Monte.

A German botanist, born in Erlangen in 1794, who died in Munich in 1868. Having taken part in the scientific expedition organised in 1817 by the Austrian and Bavarian governments to explore Brazil, he visited Madeira towards the end of the first quarter of the 19th century, and in his works mentions various plant species found both in Funchal and at Nossa Senhora do Monte (‘Our Lady of the Mount’).
