A composite plant widely grown at Camacha and elsewhere in Madeira. An infusion of its flower heads is stimulant and tonic, and can also be used externally to treat certain inflammations of the eyes. It is not the typical form but the golden variety that occurs in Madeira. The chamomile (macela) used at Madalena (‘Magdalene’) and Fajã da Ovelha (‘the ewe’s flat’) is Achillea Ageratum, a plant that likewise belongs to the family of the Compositae.
