Diogo Lopes, da Estacada (‘stockade’), says the annotator of the Saudades, was one of the first settlers of the island of Madeira: he lived in Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), at the locality (sítio) of Torre (‘tower’), and his sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) comprised a good part of the land lying from the Pico (‘peak’) towards Funchal as far as the Covão (‘large hollow’).
