Lopes Rocha (Dr Vitúrio)

Original title: Lopes Rocha (Dr. Vitúrio)

Biographical note on Dr. Vitúrio Lopes Rocha (born 1752), a Funchal-born mathematician who taught at the University of Coimbra and later sought the post of prefect of the public schools of Madeira.

He was born in this city on 5 September 1752, the son of António Lopes Rocha and brother of the dean Dr João Francisco Lopes Rocha. He studied in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), where he took the degree of doctor, receiving the doctoral hood (capelo) on 24 December 1777. He sat the competitive examination for professor and taught there for many years. When already retired on a pension and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences (Academia Real das Sciencias), he applied for the post of prefect (prefeito) of the Public Schools of Madeira, an office which we do not know whether he ever held. We have been unable to obtain any further information about this Madeiran.
