Lemos (Colonel José António de Azevedo)
Original title: Lemos (Coronel José António de Azevedo)
Colonel José António de Azevedo Lemos commanded the 1828 military expedition sent to bring Madeira under the Miguelist government. He is remembered for his bitter quarrels with Governor José Maria Monteiro and for allowing his troops to abuse the constitutionalists.
He commanded the military expedition that came to Madeira in 1828 to bring the island under the Miguelite (supporter of the absolutist King Miguel) government. He became known for his serious disagreements with the Governor and Captain-General José Maria Monteiro, going so far as to ask the Government to replace this official because of his incompetence and his habit of listening only to ‘an infamous circle of individuals abominable for their vices and bad morals’. On one occasion he insulted the Governor in the São Lourenço Palace (‘St Lawrence’), and was only prevented from striking him because several officers who were present intervened.
Colonel Lemos allowed the troops under his command to commit every kind of excess against the constitutionalists, and he consequently became unpopular with most of the population of Funchal.

Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
