Lamprey (Petromyson marinus)

Original title: Lampreia (Petromyson marinus)

The sea lamprey, a jawless cyclostome fish that occasionally appears in Madeiran waters. Local fishermen have no name for it.

A cyclostome fish that appears from time to time in the seas around Madeira, but to which the island’s fishermen give no name at all. Besides its worm-like shape, it has neither pectoral nor ventral fins, and it is equipped with a round, jawless mouth, with which it forms a kind of sucker that it uses to attach itself to other species. The sea lamprey usually appears in the rivers of Europe during the spring.
