Júlio Augusto Henriques, eminent Portuguese botanist and Coimbra professor, visited Madeira briefly in 1903 on his way to São Tomé.
He was in Madeira on 25 June 1903, during the scientific voyage he made to the island of São Tomé, and visited Monte (‘hill’) and various parts of the city. Dr Júlio A. Henriques was born in Cabeceiras de Basto on 17 January 1838. He was a professor of botany at the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), retired on a pension from his chair, and one of the most distinguished naturalists of our country.
