Gil

Note on the surname Gil, probably first borne in the archipelago by Vasco Gil, an early settler whose name survives in a locality of Santo António.

In the parish (freguesia) of Santo António there is the locality (sítio) of Vasco Gil, where a man of that name, one of the first settlers of this island, held land as a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) and was one of the good men (homens bons, local notables eligible for municipal office) of the old governing body (governança, the notables eligible for municipal office) of Funchal. He was perhaps the first person in this archipelago to bear the surname Gil.
