Galdo

The Galdo surname, borne by the early settler Pedro Gomes Galdo, landholder in Boaventura and São Jorge, linked to the São Cristóvão chapel.

In the article on the parish (freguesia) of Boaventura (‘good fortune’) we have already mentioned Pedro Gomes Galdo, one of the first settlers to bear this surname here. He held much land by sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) in Boaventura and São Jorge. The foundation of the chapel of São Cristóvão (St Christopher) in the parish of Boaventura, long before the creation of the parish itself, is attributed to this Pedro Galdo or to one of his descendants.
