Frias

Explains that the Pico dos Frias, site of the São João Baptista fortress begun in 1622, is named after the Italian early settler Romeu Frias.

The peak on which construction of the castle of São João Baptista, better known as the Fort of the Pico (fortaleza do Pico), began in 1622 was and still is called Pico dos Frias. The name was given to it by Romeu Frias, an Italian by nationality, who lived there and held land there as a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation), and who was one of the earliest settlers of this island.
