Freire (Francisco da Costa)

Governor and captain-general of Madeira appointed in 1724, remembered for founding the Recolhimento das Órfãs and for his work as provedor of the Misericórdia.

He was governor and captain-general of this archipelago. His appointment is dated 6 June 1724, and he took office on 27 July of the same year.

As president (provedor) of the Holy House (Santa Casa, the Misericórdia), he rendered excellent service to this charitable institution. He linked his name to Madeiran history by founding the Orphan Girls’ Retreat (Recolhimento das Órfãs) in 1724 (see that entry).
