Phosphorescence of the sea

Original title: Fosforescência do Mar

Explains that the phosphorescence of Madeira's coastal waters is produced by vast numbers of the organism Noctiluca miliaris, a phenomenon already noted by La Pérouse in the late eighteenth century.

The phosphorescence of the coastal waters of Madeira is produced by myriads of cystoflagellates belonging to Noctiluca miliaris. It was already noted by La Pérouse during the visit he made to this island at the end of the 18th century.

Many dinoflagellates are also phosphorescent, and some may well be discovered once the plankton of Madeira has been properly studied.
