This German botanist and his son Johann Georg Adam Forster accompanied Captain James Cook on his second voyage to the southern seas, arriving at the port of Funchal on 29 July 1772. Specimens of the plants they collected on this island are in the herbaria of the University of Kiel and of the Natural History Museum in Paris.
