Original title: Fonte Arcada (Pedro Joaquim de Magalhãis Iº visconde de)
Military officer who married into the Andrade family of Madeira and inherited the Andrade entail; his descendants held Madeiran estates until about 1900.
He was a distinguished soldier and married, on this island, Dona Luíza da Silva, daughter of Manuel Dias de Andrade, who was the administrator of the entailed estate (morgadio) of the Andrade family. Fonte Arcada, who died in 1688, inherited this entailed estate. A descendant of his and his wife’s, Francisco Joaquim de Magalhãis, 4th Viscount of Fonte Arcada, a distinguished diplomat and peer of the realm, administered this important entailed estate. He was on this island in 1865, visiting his properties, and while here contributed to one of the Funchal newspapers. A descendant and heir of his sold all the properties he owned in Madeira some twenty years ago.
