Biography of Augusto de Arzila Fonseca (1853–1912), Funchal-born mathematician and army-trained graduate who became a substitute lecturer at the University of Coimbra.
He was born in Funchal on 21 October 1853. In 1883 he graduated in philosophy and mathematics from the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), and in 1884 he took his doctorate in the latter of these faculties, having previously completed the infantry course at the Army School (Escola do Exército), where he graduated first in his class. On the occasion of his doctorate he published his These de mathematica pura e applicada. In 1885 he was appointed substitute professor (lente substituto) at the University. He published Princípios elementares de quaterniões à mecanica. He died on 17 February 1912.
