Ferreira Passos (José Gerardo)

Biographical entry on José Gerardo Ferreira Passos (1801–1870), army general who was appointed civil governor of the Madeira district in 1854 while also serving as its military commander. A veteran of the liberal army, he became a peer of the realm and minister of war.

On 14 June 1854 he was appointed civil governor of this district, taking office on the 25th of the same month and year, and he served at the same time as military commander of Madeira.

He served in the liberating army and greatly distinguished himself in many engagements. He held the rank of divisional general, was a peer of the realm and held the portfolio of war.

He was born in Elvas on 11 November 1801 and died in Lisbon on 12 April 1870.
