This surname seems to have been introduced into Madeira by Braz Gil de Faria, who held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) land on the right bank of the Ribeira da Caixa (‘box stream’), in Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’).
