Newspaper or periodical

O Direito was the title of several Funchal newspapers. The first ran from 1857 to 1859; the longest-running was founded in 1859 by João Augusto de Ornelas; a later series appeared from 1902 to 1911.

The first issue appeared on 21 October 1857 and the last, no. 93, on 7 August 1859. Its editor was Pedro Maria Gonçalves de Freitas.

Another newspaper of the same title appeared, published with various interruptions over several decades; its founder and chief editor was the Madeiran writer João Augusto de Ornelas. The 1st issue came out on 2 November 1859.

Another series of the same newspaper, which we believe to be the fourth, was published from 20 April 1902 (no. 2,511) to 11 January 1911 (no. 5,060).
