Cupertino (Friar José)

Original title: Cupertino (Fr. José)

Friar José Cupertino, of the Franciscan convent in Funchal, was a renowned preacher who published two rare sermons in 1823.

He was a friar of the Convent of São Francisco (St Francis of Assisi) in Funchal and in his day enjoyed great renown here as a preacher and a man of wide learning. We know of two discourses he published in Funchal in 1823: one preached in the church of São Martinho (St Martin of Tours), and the other entitled Oração de acção de graças prégada na igreja cathedral da Sé do Funchal em 8 de Julho de 1823 por ocasião da solene festividade... pela feliz restauração de el-rei N. S. ao throno de seus augustos maiores..., Funchal, 1823. These discourses are extremely rare.
