Coelho Machado (Rafael)

Madeiran-born composer and music writer (1814–?) who emigrated to Brazil in 1838 and wrote the first musical dictionary in the Portuguese language.

Coelho Machado (Rafael)

He was born on this island in 1814 and in 1838 left for Brazil, where he died. He made his name as a composer and writer on music. We know of his works only from the list of them given by Joaquim de Vasconcelos in his esteemed book Musicos Portugueses. Coelho Machado wrote a Diccionario Musical, the first work of its kind to appear in the Portuguese language. His writings include:

  • Methodo de musica ou Principios de musica pratica para uso dos principiantes, 1842
  • Breve tratado de Harmonia, 1851
  • Melodias originaes, some of which were translated into Italian
  • Diccionario musical. . . Rio de Janeiro, 1842, 275 pp.

He left many compositions of sacred music, and translated and published various methods for the study of the piano, flute, fiddle, etc.
