Castilho (José de)

Young Portuguese naval officer, hero of the brig Mondego, who came to Madeira for his health and died there of tuberculosis in 1864.

The illustrious writer Dom António da Costa wrote a book entitled José de Castilho, o Heroe do Brigue Mondego, published in Lisbon in 1874. It deals with the young and distinguished naval officer José de Castilho, son of José Feliciano de Castilho and nephew of the great poet António Feliciano de Castilho, Viscount of Castilho. For health reasons José de Castilho came to Madeira with his mother, and he died here of pulmonary tuberculosis on 10 December 1864. Dom António da Costa devotes some brilliant pages of his book to the island of Madeira.
