A hill in Machico parish with wide views, on whose slopes rebel and government troops clashed on 2 May 1931.

A hill in the parish (freguesia) of Machico, from whose summit there are fine views stretching from the parish of Caniço (‘reed’) to the eastern tip of the island. It was on the slopes of this hill that the rebel troops and the government forces met and exchanged fire on 2 May 1931, as will be described more fully in the article on popular uprisings.

Chronology
  • The military uprising known as the Revolução da Madeira, linked to a revolt in the Azores, was suppressed; General Sousa Dias held the military command, and on 2 May rebels and government forces exchanged fire on Pico do Castanho.
