Capitães-mores
Original title: Capitãis-mores
The capitães-mores, commanders of the local militia (ordenanças), were abolished in Madeira by the decree of 20 July 1832 and were remembered for their abuses and oppression of the people.
They were abolished on this island by the decree of 20 July 1832, which did away with the territorial militia (ordenanças), or third line, ‘with all their posts of whatever denomination’. The capitães-mores, who had the sargentos-mores as their subordinates, left a sad memory for the arbitrary acts they committed and the oppression and humiliation to which they subjected the people.
