The camellia, a Japanese shrub or small tree common in Madeira, is described as one of the finest ornaments of the quintas of Monte and Camacha. It is also known locally as 'japonesa'.

A shrub or small tree of the family Ternstroemiaceae, very common in Madeira. It is native to Japan and one of the loveliest ornaments of the quintas of Monte (‘hill’) and Camacha. It is also known by the name japonesa.
